How do shares work?

Each person's amount is their share divided by the total shares. With four people on one share each, everyone pays a quarter. Give one person two shares and they pay two fifths while the others pay one fifth each.

Should the tip be split the same way?

This calculator applies the tip to the whole bill before dividing, so it is split in the same proportion as the food. That is the usual convention; if someone wants to tip separately, take their tip off the total first.

Exact figures rarely divide evenly. The amounts here are unrounded so they sum back to the bill; in practice one person usually absorbs the few cents of difference.
